Bishop Larry Silva announces the "Resumption of Sunday Mass Obligation":
Effective Easter Sunday, April 4 (or as of the Easter Vigil, April 3), I am ending the dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass, which has been in effect since mid-March, 2020. However, anyone who is sick, may have been exposed to anyone with COVID-19, or who has a health condition that would endanger themselves or others by being present in church, continues to be dispensed.

"As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, this new year brings some hope in controlling the virus through vaccines. The State of Hawaii vaccination plan is being implemented at this time. You may have some moral or ethical concerns regarding the potential contents (compromised cell lines/fetal cells) of these vaccines in relation to our Catholic teaching and faith."  Click on the link below to read the Bishop's letter in its entirety.

Master Plan Update - December 27, 2020
Since the last update both the Design Team & Committee have reviewed floor finishes and ceiling finishes.  We evaluated ceramic tile, polished granite, Ardex PC-T, & polished concrete as well as combinations of these.  Cost estimates ranged from $78,550-$153,900.  The final selection encompasses a combination of polished concrete, 2 colors of Ardex PC-T for the baptismal font & sanctuary with a zinc strip set in polished concrete for the center aisle.  Estimated cost is $83,550.
Next, the teams evaluated ceiling finishes; drywall, wood, wood veneer, slatted wood, linear wood, acoustical drywall, and stretched fabric (not to be confused with cloth or material).  In addition to the finishes the teams also looked at acoustics.  As with any large structure reverberation is a concern, particularly for the spoken word.  The acoustical engineers provided us with the range of acceptable Noise Reduction Coefficients for the new church.  In short, from an acoustical perspective all the options considered would meet our needs with minimal reverb except for 100% painted drywall.  Although the warmth of wood whether solid, veneer, or slatted would be nice, these options would run from $560,000-$595,000 for the lowest cost wood option and approach $900,000 for the priciest.  Ultimately, the committee opted for a combination of 50% stretched fabric and 50% painted drywall with a cost of $337,500.
We are currently approaching the completion of 50% Construction Documents.  Design Build Hawaii and RLB are now updating our total construction cost for the new church.  As we continue to develop construction documents to its final form and cost estimate the committee will have to evaluate affordability and determine whether to seek Diocesan approval of a construction loan.
