Ma Ke Kula Update - October 5, 2014 Bulletin

After updating the demographic study done for the Leeward Vicariate originally completed in 2010 with 2014 data it was demonstrated that mass attendance at OLPH is expected to exceed current capacity by 2020 and beyond.  The architects with the assistance of both civil and mechanical engineers then began an evaluation of existing facilities along with research into current zoning code requirements.  Simultaneously the architects summarized the results of questionnaires and surveys of the various ministries, administrators of church and school, and parishioners who completed one.
The major findings in the questionnaires/surveys were that improvements to the church were needed, seating capacity needed to be increased, additional parking was needed, restrooms required renovation/upgrades, and a multi-purpose center was desirous.
The engineers reported that although the basic structures of the church and school were sound there were significant maintenance and deferred maintenance items required in the near future. The major items identified:
  •  Air Conditioning
    • Church $180K
    • Offices $65K
    • Meeting Rooms $10K
  • Church Roof Replacement $71K
  • Partial Parking Lot Resurface $31K
  • Exterior Painting $18K

Total $375K

Other items identified without cost estimates were the replacement of the church exterior doors,  restroom fixture upgrades, parking lot lighting, and interior building lighting is inefficient older technology.  It was also noted that any renovations or expansions to existing structures would require conformance to current building codes.  Significant areas of concern would be the need to increase both electrical and water service.  Any permitted work would require the installation of automated fire suppression systems.  In a future article we will discuss the Ma Ke Kula challenge.  The poster boards are nearing completion showing the schematic floor plan, optional siting, features, and estimated cost will be posted shortly for your review.
